What We Sing: Now Why This Fear

If you've ever wondered what kind of music we sing at Calvary Grace and haven't had a chance to visit, here is your opportunity! We're going to start a series of posts here on the church blog that links to examples of songs we sing at our church. Our hope is that it not only will highlight edifying songs for Christians beyond our church, but that it will also point families to useful resources for their own devotions.

Recently our deacon for music ministries, Ben Hopman, introduced this new song to us during a Good Friday gathering at Pastor Clint's house. It was so well-received by our congregation I thought we would share it here as a way to start this series! "Now Why This Fear" is a great summary of the Gospel, glorifying God for his work in our salvation and calling us to rest peacefully in the confidence that we are safe in Christ. It is generally contemporary in style but is more of a hymn in substance.

One of the nicest parts of the song is the crescendo at the end, where the guys sing the bridge and the ladies sing the chorus simultaneously. You can listen to it by clicking here:

"Now Why This Fear," by Sovereign Grace Music

"Now Why This Fear" is a contemporary rewrite of a much older work, as are many of the songs we sing. it is based on a work by Augustus Toplady from 1772, and was adapted and given some additional lyrics by Doug Plank. It is available from Sovereign Grace Music on their CD "The Gathering: Songs From WorshipGod11," and the download is only $1. It is definitely worth having! My kids are really enjoying singing this piece in our family worship.

Here are the lyrics from the Sovereign Grace page:

Verse 1
Now why this fear and unbelief?
Has not the Father put to grief
His spotless Son for us?
And will the righteous Judge of men
Condemn me for that debt of sin
Now canceled at the cross?

Chorus
Jesus, all my trust is in Your blood
Jesus, You’ve rescued us
Through Your great love

Verse 2
Complete atonement You have made
And by Your death have fully paid
The debt Your people owed
No wrath remains for us to face
We’re sheltered by Your saving grace
And sprinkled with Your blood

Bridge
How sweet the sound of saving grace
How sweet the sound of saving grace
Christ died for me

Verse 3
Be still my soul and know this peace
The merits of your great high priest
Have bought your liberty
Rely then on His precious blood
Don’t fear your banishment from God
Since Jesus sets you free
