Call to Worship

Hebrews 13:8 Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.

Opening Prayer

HYMN: All I Have is Christ

VERSE 1

I once was lost in darkest night
Yet thought I knew the way
The sin that promised joy and life
Had led me to the grave
I had no hope that You would own
A rebel to Your will
And if You had not loved me first
I would refuse You still

CHORUS

Hallelujah! All I have is Christ
Hallelujah! Jesus is my life

VERSE 2

But as I ran my hell-bound race
Indifferent to the cost
You looked upon my helpless state
And led me to the cross
And I beheld God’s love displayed
You suffered in my place
You bore the wrath reserved for me
Now all I know is grace

CHORUS

Hallelujah! All I have is Christ
Hallelujah! Jesus is my life

VERSE 3

Now, Lord, I would be Yours alone
And live so all might see
The strength to follow Your commands
Could never come from me
O Father, use my ransomed life
In any way You choose
And let my song forever be
My only boast is You

Confession of Sin Hebrews 13:10-12

10 We have an altar from which those who serve the tent have no right to eat. 11 For the bodies of those animals whose blood is brought into the holy places by the high priest as a sacrifice for sin are burned outside the camp. 12 So Jesus also suffered outside the gate in order to sanctify the people through his own blood.

Assurance of Pardon  Hebrews 13:13-16

13 Therefore let us go to him outside the camp and bear the reproach he endured. 14 For here we have no lasting city, but we seek the city that is to come. 15 Through him then let us continually offer up a sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of lips that acknowledge his name. 16 Do not neglect to do good and to share what you have, for such sacrifices are pleasing to God.

Prayer of Confession and Assurance of Pardon

Second London Baptist Confession (AD1689)

God, the supreme Lord and King of all the world, has ordained civil magistrates to be under him, over the people, for his own glory and the public good; and to this end has armed them with the power of the sword, for defence and encouragement of them that do good, and for the punishment of evil doers.

Scripture Reading:

Exodus 20:4-6

4 “You shall not make for yourself

a carved image, or any likeness of anything

that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth.

5 You shall not bow down to them or serve them, for I the Lord your God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and the fourth generation of those who hate me,

6 but showing steadfast love to thousands of those who love me and keep my commandments.

Pastoral Prayer

HYMN  When I Survey the Wondrous Cross

VERSE 1

When I survey the wondrous cross
On which the Prince of Glory died
My richest gain I count but loss
And pour contempt on all my pride

VERSE 2

Forbid it, Lord, that I should boast
Save in the death of Christ, my God
All the vain things that charm me most
I sacrifice them to His blood

VERSE 3

See, from His head, His hands, His feet
Sorrow and love flow mingled down
Did e’er such love and sorrow meet
Or thorns compose so rich a crown?

VERSE 4

Were all the realms of nature mine
That were an offering far too small
Love so amazing, so divine
Demands my soul, my life, my all

Isaac Watts, 1707

Sermon:

Exodus 20:4-6 Not Making For Yourself: The Second Commandment

  1. For Yourself

  2. Carved Images

  3. You shall not bow down to them

  4. The Good Jealousy of God

CLOSING HYMN  Holy, Holy, Holy

Verse1

Holy, holy, holy!
Lord God Almighty!
Early in the morning
our song shall rise to thee.
Holy, holy, holy! Merciful and mighty!
God in three Persons, blessed Trinity!

Verse2

Holy, holy, holy!
All the saints adore thee,
casting down their golden crowns
around the glassy sea;
cherubim and seraphim
falling down before thee,
who wert, and art, and evermore shalt be.

Verse 3

Holy, holy, holy!
Though the darkness hide thee,
though the eye of sinful man thy glory may not see,
only thou art holy; there is none beside thee
perfect in pow'r, in love, and purity.

Verse 4

Holy, holy, holy! Lord God Almighty!
All thy works shall praise thy name in earth and sky and sea.
Holy, holy, holy! Merciful and mighty!
God in three Persons, blessed Trinity!

By Reginald Heber (1826)

Benediction:  Hebrews 13:20-21

20 Now may the God of peace who brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus, the great shepherd of the sheep, by the blood of the eternal covenant, 21 equip you with everything good that you may do his will, working in usb that which is pleasing in his sight, through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory forever and ever. Amen.
