Call to Worship

Acts 2:1-4 When the day of Pentecost arrived, they were all together in one place. And suddenly there came from heaven a sound like a mighty rushing wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. And divided tongues as of fire appeared to them and rested on each one of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance.”

Opening Prayer

HYMN: Holy Spirit Living Breath of God

Holy Spirit, living breath of God,

Breathe new life into my willing soul.

Let the presence of the risen Lord,

Come renew my heart and make me whole.

Cause Your Word to come alive in me;

Give me faith for what I cannot see,

Give me passion for Your purity;

Holy Spirit, breathe new life in me.

Holy Spirit, come abide within,

May Your joy be seen in all I do.

Love enough to cover every sin,

In each thought and deed and attitude.

Kindness to the greatest and the least,

Gentleness that sows the path of peace.

Turn my strivings into works of grace;

Breath of God show Christ in all I do.

Holy Spirit, from creation’s birth,

Giving life to all that God has made,

Show Your power once again on earth,

Cause Your church to hunger for your ways.

Let the fragrance of our prayers arise;

Lead us on the road of sacrifice,

That in unity the face of Christ

May be clear for all the world to see.

Confession of Sin Acts 2:22-24

“Men of Israel, hear these words: Jesus of Nazareth, a man attested to you by God with mighty works and wonders and signs that God did through him in your midst, as you yourselves know— this Jesus, delivered up according to the definite plan and foreknowledge of God, you crucified and killed by the hands of lawless men. God raised him up, loosing the pangs of death, because it was not possible for him to be held by it.

Assurance of Pardon  Acts 2:38-41

And Peter said to them, “Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. For the promise is for you and for your children and for all who are far off, everyone whom the Lord our God calls to himself.” And with many other words he bore witness and continued to exhort them, saying, “Save yourselves from this crooked generation.” So those who received his word were baptized, and there were added that day about three thousand souls.

Prayer of Confession and Assurance of Pardon

Scots Confession- John Knox  (1560 AD)

Our faith and its assurance do not proceed from flesh and blood, that is to say, from natural powers within us, but are the inspiration of the Holy Ghost; whom we confess to be God, equal with the Father and with his Son, who sanctifies us, and brings us into all truth by his own working, without whom we should remain forever enemies to God and ignorant of his Son, Christ Jesus.

Scripture Reading:

Exodus 20:1-3

And God spoke all these words, saying,

“I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery.

“You shall have no other gods before me.

Pastoral Prayer

HYMN  Speak, O Lord

Speak, O Lord, as we come to You

To receive the food of your holy word.

Take Your truth, plant it deep in us;

Shape and fashion us in Your likeness,

That the light of Christ might be seen today

In our acts of love and our deeds of faith.

Speak, O Lord, and fulfil in us

All Your purposes, for Your glory.

Teach us Lord full obedience,

Holy reverence, true humility.

Test our thoughts and our attitudes

In the radiance of Your purity.

Cause our faith to rise

Cause our eyes to see,

Your majestic love and authority.

Words of power that can never fail;

Let their truth prevail over unbelief.

Speak, O Lord, and renew our minds;

Help us grasp the heights of Your plans for us.

Truths unchanged from the dawn of time,

That will echo down through eternity.

And by grace we’ll stand on Your promises;

And by faith we’ll walk as You walk with us.

Speak, O Lord, ’til your church is built

And the earth is filled with Your glory.

  2. The Identity of God

  3. The Priority of God

CLOSING HYMN  Christ the Sure and Steady Anchor

VERSE 1

Christ, the sure and steady anchor

In the fury of the storm

When the winds of doubt blow through me

And my sails have all been torn.

In the suff’ring, in the sorrow,

When my sinking hopes are few,

I will hold fast to the anchor;

It shall never be removed.

VERSE 2

Christ, the sure and steady anchor

While the tempest rages on,

When temptation claims the battle

And it seems the night has won;

Deeper still then goes the anchor

Though I justly stand accused;

I will hold fast to the anchor;

It shall never be removed.

VERSE 3

Christ, the sure and steady anchor

Through the floods of unbelief;

Hopeless somehow, O my soul,

Now lift your eyes to Calvary.

This, my ballast of assurance;

See His love forever proved;

I will hold fast to the anchor;

It shall never be removed.

VERSE 4

Christ, the sure and steady anchor

As we face the wave of death,

When these trials give way to glory,

As we draw our final breath;

We will cross that great horizon,

Clouds behind and life secure,

And the calm will be the better

For the storms that we endure.

Christ, the shore of our salvation,

Ever faithful, ever true;

We will hold fast to the anchor;

It shall never be removed.
