God Came Down: Who Is This Jesus?

Topic: Sermon Scripture: Mark 9:1–13

A look at Jesus' first appearance in Mark's Gospel--and how its answer to the question "Who is this Jesus?" changes everything for us today.

Long ago, in a dark age of corruption and strife, the anguished Hebrew prophet Isaiah cried out to God: "Oh, that you would rend the heavens and come down!" Seven hundred years later, as an unknown carpenter from a backwater town in the rough district of Galilee was baptized in the Jordan River, that prayer was finally answered. God tore the skies and came down--but not in the way his people expected. In this passage, where Mark introduces Jesus for the first time, Jews and Gentiles alike are confronted with the most important question in all of history: who is this Jesus? The answer confounded Israel - and changes everything for us all.
